Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups (350g) granulated sugar
- ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 ½ cups (450g) powdered sugar
- ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup (60ml) milk (add more if needed for consistency)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round baking pans.Prepare the Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat with a mixer on medium speed until smooth.
- Slowly stir in the boiling water until fully combined (the batter will be thin).
Bake the Cake:
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Make the Frosting:
- Beat the butter in a large bowl until creamy.
- Gradually sift in powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed.
- Add vanilla and milk, beating until smooth and fluffy.
Assemble the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top.
- Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
Decorate:
- Add sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fruit for decoration.
